πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί AI-ECTA Means Lower Duties. The Rest Is Up to Your Factory.

Australia's trade deal with India is genuinely good news for importers. But duty savings mean nothing if the shipment fails biosecurity or the quality's off. We handle the India side properly.

Why Australia + India is a strong match right now

The Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA) eliminated or reduced duties on a wide range of Indian goods. For furniture, textiles, homewares, and handicrafts, the duty savings are real β€” not theoretical. If you're still paying full MFN rates on Indian products, you're leaving money on the table.

Beyond the trade deal, the product fit is natural. Australia's retail market loves natural materials, artisan stories, and distinctive design β€” exactly what Rajasthan's workshops produce. Solid Sheesham dining tables, hand-knotted rugs, brass lanterns: these sell in Sydney and Melbourne because they don't look like everything else.

Shipping is straightforward: Mundra or Nhava Sheva to Sydney/Melbourne runs about 22–30 days, to Brisbane/Fremantle a few days more. Time zones overlap enough for real conversations during business hours.

What Australia actually requires

AI-ECTA preference claims β€” get the paperwork right

To claim reduced duties under AI-ECTA, you need a valid proof of origin from the Indian exporter. This sounds simple. In practice, plenty of Indian factories have never issued one correctly. We make sure origin documentation is prepared properly so your broker can actually claim the preference β€” otherwise you pay full duty and the trade deal helps nobody.

ABF clearance

The Australian Border Force wants accurate import declarations: correct tariff classification, proper valuation, clean commercial invoices. Undervaluation games or vague product descriptions invite examination. We keep factory export documents precise and consistent.

Biosecurity β€” Australia doesn't joke about this

This is the big one for our product categories. Timber products need to meet biosecurity requirements β€” treatment, documentation, sometimes inspection on arrival. Bamboo, rattan, and unfinished wood are higher risk. Pallets and wood packaging must be ISPM-15 compliant (heat-treated, stamped). We've seen containers get fumigated at the importer's expense because the pallets weren't compliant. We check this in India, where fixing it costs almost nothing.

ACCC and labelling

Consumer goods need proper labelling: fibre content for textiles, care instructions, country of origin. Furniture has specific requirements around care and assembly instructions. Nothing exotic β€” but it has to be right.

A story we see too often

A Melbourne furniture retailer imported their first container of Sheesham dining tables direct from a Jodhpur factory they'd found online. The tables were good. The pallets weren't ISPM-15 stamped. Biosecurity ordered fumigation at the port β€” $2,800 plus a week's delay, right before their spring catalogue launch. The factory had no idea what ISPM-15 was. Now every Australia-bound shipment we handle gets a packaging and treatment checklist before loading. The tables still sell brilliantly. The fumigation bill never repeated.

Questions Australian buyers ask us

How do we actually claim the AI-ECTA duty reduction?

Your customs broker claims it, but they need a correct proof of origin from the Indian exporter. We make sure the factory issues it properly β€” product description matching, correct format, signed. Without it, you pay full duty.

What does it cost?

5–10% commission on order value, or $1,500–$3,000/month retainer. Inspections about $500 per visit outside a retainer. Quoted in writing before we start. No factory kickbacks.

What about timber biosecurity?

We verify treatment and documentation for timber products and ensure all wood packaging is ISPM-15 compliant. This is non-negotiable for Australia and we treat it that way.

How long is shipping?

Mundra/Nhava Sheva to Sydney/Melbourne: roughly 22–30 days. Brisbane and Fremantle add a few days.

Can you handle smaller orders?

Yes. We work with independent retailers as well as larger importers. Smaller buyers often need us most β€” you don't have a team in India, so we become it.
