Why India makes sense for EU buyers right now
Let's be honest: China is still faster and cheaper for electronics. But for furniture, textiles, handicrafts, stone, and rugs? India is genuinely hard to beat β and the gap keeps widening.
The EU-India free trade agreement is moving forward, which means lower duties on a growing list of products. CBAM (the EU's carbon border tax) is also reshaping the maths β and India's handcrafted and natural-material products often have a lighter carbon story than mass-manufactured alternatives.
Then there's the practical stuff: English-speaking suppliers, a legal system you can actually navigate, and time zones that overlap with your working day. Try getting a straight answer from a factory at 3am your time β with India, you usually don't have to.
The compliance part (the bit that keeps EU buyers up at night)
This is where most India sourcing goes wrong for European companies. The product is fine. The paperwork isn't. Here's what actually matters:
CE marking
If your product falls under an EU directive (furniture, lighting, toys, electronics), it needs proper CE conformity β not a sticker someone printed in the packing room. We check that the factory understands which directives apply and has the test reports to back it up.
REACH
Chemical restrictions. This bites hardest on textiles (dyes, finishes), leather goods, and anything with coatings or adhesives. We've seen shipments held because nobody checked the SVHC list. We make sure restricted substances are flagged before production, not after arrival.
GPSR β the new General Product Safety Regulation
In force since December 2024. Every product sold in the EU needs a designated economic operator in the EU, proper traceability labelling, and a technical file. If you're importing directly from India, you are the importer with the obligations. We help you get the documentation right at source.
CBAM β Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism
Currently phasing in for cement, iron, steel, aluminium, fertilisers, and electricity. If you source metal goods from India, you need embedded-emissions data from your supplier. Most Indian factories have never heard of CBAM. We bridge that gap.
A story we see too often
A Dutch home dΓ©cor retailer came to us after a container of brass lanterns got flagged at Rotterdam. The products were beautiful. The problem? No proper REACH documentation for the lacquer coating, and the CE file for the electrical components was β to put it kindly β invented. Three weeks of port storage fees later, they called us. Now we audit their suppliers before a single purchase order goes out. No surprises since.
What we actually do on the ground
We're based in Jodhpur, Rajasthan β right in the middle of India's furniture, stone, and handicraft belt. We're not a trading company marking up factory prices. We're your people on the factory floor.
- Factory audits before you commit. We visit, we check machinery, we verify export licences, we photograph everything. You get a real report, not a brochure.
- Compliance checks at source. CE, REACH, GPSR documentation β we chase the test reports and certificates while the goods are still in India, where fixes are cheap.
- Production monitoring. We check in during manufacturing so the bulk order matches the approved sample. (The classic India sourcing horror story is "sample perfect, shipment disaster." We exist to prevent that.)
- Pre-shipment inspection with photos. AQL sampling, defect grading, packaging checks β documented with timestamped photos you can show your own customers.
- Container loading supervision. We count cartons, check seals, and photograph the stuffing. What leaves the factory is what arrives at your warehouse.
What we source β our 8 categories
We don't do everything. We do these eight, properly:
Solid Wood Furniture β Sheesham, mango, acacia; Jodhpur workshops
Natural Stone & Paving β Sandstone, marble, granite; Rajasthan quarries
Handicrafts & Home DΓ©cor β Brassware, iron crafts, wood carvings
Carpets & Dhurries β Hand-knotted wool rugs, cotton flatweaves
Metal Crafts & Brassware β Lighting, lanterns, copper tableware
Sports Goods & Equipment β Cricket gear, leather balls; Meerut
Vintage & Antiques β Haveli doors, distressed cabinets, trunks
Textiles & Home Furnishings β Block prints, cushion covers, bedding
How it works
- You tell us what you need. Specs, target prices, quantities, delivery timeline. The more detail, the better the match.
- We find and vet factories. Shortlist of real manufacturers β visited, photographed, verified.
- Samples. We coordinate counter-samples and check them against your specs before anything scales.
- Compliance paperwork. CE, REACH, GPSR docs lined up during production, not after.
- Production monitoring & final inspection. Eyes on the line, then a full pre-shipment check with photos.
- Loading & dispatch. Supervised stuffing, sealed container, documents in order.
Questions EU buyers ask us
Do you handle CE and REACH documentation?
We verify and chase it at the factory level β test reports, declarations of conformity, technical files. We don't issue certificates ourselves (that's a notified body's job), but we make sure your supplier has the real paperwork before you pay the balance.
What does it cost?
Two models: 5β10% commission on order value, or a monthly retainer of $1,500β$3,000 depending on scope. Inspections run about $500 per visit if outside a retainer. Everything quoted in writing before we start. No hidden factory kickbacks β we work for you.
How long does sea freight take to Europe?
Typically 25β32 days to Rotterdam, Hamburg, or Antwerp from Mundra or Nhava Sheva port. We factor this into production timelines so you're not caught short for seasonal stock.
Can you consolidate from multiple suppliers?
Yes β furniture from Jodhpur, brass from Moradabad, rugs from Bhadohi, all into one container. We coordinate it.
Do you work with small EU retailers or only large importers?
Both. First-time importers actually benefit most β they don't yet know what they don't know about compliance, and that's exactly where mistakes get expensive.
