Rajasthan is responsible for roughly 70% of India's natural stone production, and sandstone is the region's most iconic product. From the golden quarries of Barmer to the honey-coloured stone of Jodhpur, this material has been used in construction for centuries β and it's still one of India's top stone exports.
Types of Sandstone Available in Rajasthan
The most commonly exported varieties include: Jodhpur Pink (a warm pinkish-red), Jodhpur Gold (honey-gold), Chittar (grey-green, very popular in European markets), Dholpur (cream to light brown), Modak (reddish-brown), and Mandana (pinkish-cream). Each variety has different hardness, porosity, and aesthetic characteristics.
Barmer produces its own distinctive varieties β predominantly yellow and golden sandstone that's prized for paving, wall cladding, and garden landscaping. Barmer sandstone is generally harder and more consistent than some Jodhpur varieties.
How Sandstone Grades Work
Sandstone is graded based on density, porosity, colour consistency, and surface finish. Premium grade has uniform colour, minimal natural veining, and high density. Standard grade allows some colour variation and minor surface imperfections β perfectly acceptable for most paving and cladding applications.
The important thing to understand is that natural stone will always have variation. No two slabs are identical. If someone offers you perfectly uniform sandstone at a suspiciously low price, ask questions.
Pricing Factors
Sandstone pricing depends on: thickness (20mm, 30mm, 40mm+ are standard), finish (natural cleft, sawn, honed, polished, tumbled, bush-hammered), size and cut (random flags, dimensional paving, slabs, custom cuts), and quantity. Larger orders unlock significantly better per-unit pricing.
FOB prices for standard sandstone paving from Jodhpur typically range from $3-12 per square foot depending on finish and grade, with premium products commanding higher.
Logistics and Export Considerations
Sandstone is heavy. A 20-foot container typically holds 25-28 tonnes, and a 40-foot holds 26-28 tonnes (limited by weight, not volume). Palletisation is critical β poorly packed stone will arrive broken. We always recommend container loading supervision for stone shipments.
Why Having Someone on the Ground Matters
Stone sourcing benefits enormously from physical verification. You need someone who can visit quarries, check actual stock against samples, verify grading, and ensure proper packing. The difference between a good container of sandstone and a bad one often comes down to these details.
