Indian wooden furniture prepared for export sourcing

Bone inlay furniture is one of India's most distinctive and beautiful export products. Each piece features hand-cut pieces of bone (or resin, as a more affordable alternative) inlaid into carved wooden frames, creating intricate geometric and floral patterns. The best pieces are stunning β€” and the process behind them is fascinating.

How Bone Inlay Is Made

The process starts with a wooden frame β€” typically sheesham or mango wood. Artisans hand-carve patterns into the wood, then cut individual pieces of bone (usually camel bone, a byproduct of the meat industry) to fit each carved section. The bone pieces are set with adhesive, then a coloured resin is poured to fill gaps and create the background colour. Once cured, the surface is sanded smooth and polished.

Quality Markers to Look For

  • Even, consistent inlay patterns with no gaps
  • Smooth surface finish β€” no rough edges or protruding bone pieces
  • Durable resin that won't crack or discolour over time
  • Solid wooden frame construction
  • Proper drying time β€” rushed resin work leads to cracking

Bone vs Resin Inlay

Resin inlay uses synthetic resin pieces instead of bone, making it more affordable and vegetarian-friendly. Quality resin inlay can look nearly identical to bone inlay. Many buyers prefer resin for these reasons.

Sourcing from Udaipur and Jodhpur

The finest bone inlay work comes from workshops in Udaipur and the Jodhpur area. These are typically small operations with 10-30 artisans, each a specialist in their part of the process.

Lead Times and Minimum Orders

Bone inlay is labour-intensive. A single dresser might take 2-4 weeks to produce. Minimum orders vary by factory, but most will accommodate orders as small as 5-10 pieces for new clients.
