Blog/Sandstone Types You Can Source: Rajasthan natural sandstone paving slabs and calibrated tiles

Rajasthan produces dozens of sandstone varieties, each with distinct colour, texture, and performance characteristics. Here's a practical guide to the types you can source and where they come from.

Jodhpur Pink / Red

A warm pinkish-red sandstone from the Jodhpur region. One of the most popular export varieties β€” it's hard, durable, and has a beautiful warm tone that ages well. Used for paving, wall cladding, and landscaping.

Jodhpur Gold / Honey

A golden-yellow variety that's slightly softer than Jodhpur Pink. Beautiful for garden pathways and wall cladding. It develops a lovely patina over time.

Chittar Sandstone

A grey-green to greenish-brown variety, particularly popular in European markets. It's dense and hard, making it excellent for high-traffic paving. One of the premium Rajasthan sandstones.

Dholpur Beige / Cream

A light cream to beige sandstone from the Dholpur region. Clean, neutral appearance works well with contemporary designs. Moderate hardness.

Mandana Sandstone

Pinkish-cream with subtle grain patterns. A versatile mid-range option suitable for both paving and cladding applications.

Modak Red

Deep reddish-brown, one of the harder Rajasthan sandstones. Excellent for heavy-use applications and cold climates where frost resistance matters.

Barmer Yellow / Golden

From the Barmer region β€” typically harder and more consistent than some Jodhpur varieties. Ranges from bright yellow to deep gold. Popular for landscaping and architectural applications.

Jaisalmer Yellow

The famous yellow sandstone of Jaisalmer β€” used to build the Golden Fort. It's a bright, warm yellow that's distinctive but can be softer than other varieties. Best for cladding and decorative applications.

Finish Options

All these varieties can be supplied in multiple finishes: natural cleft (rough, natural texture), sawn (smooth-cut), honed (matte smooth), polished (glossy), tumbled (aged look), bush-hammered (textured), and sandblasted (anti-slip).
