Most importers focus on pre-shipment inspection β checking the finished product. But the most costly quality problems often originate before production even begins. Pre-production inspection is your chance to catch these issues early.
What Pre-Production Inspection Checks
- Raw materials: Is the wood properly dried? Is the stone the right grade? Is the fabric the correct weight and colour?
- Production setup: Are the correct machines being used? Is the tooling set up properly?
- Samples: Does the production sample match the approved sample?
- Production timeline: Is the factory actually ready to start, or are they waiting for materials?
Why It Saves Money
If you discover a material issue during pre-production, the supplier can fix it before manufacturing begins. If you discover it after shipment, you're facing returns, re-production, and months of delay. The cost of a pre-production inspection ($150-300) is trivial compared to a rejected container.
When to Request It
Always for: new suppliers, new products, custom designs, and large orders. Consider for: repeat orders where quality has been inconsistent, orders using new materials, and situations where the supplier has had recent staffing changes.
