Even high-quality furniture or precision-cut stone is vulnerable if it arrives at your warehouse with crushed corners, damaged edges, or moisture defects. An ocean container departing an inland container depot (ICD) in Jodhpur or Moradabad will endure rail transit, crane handling, ocean transit, and temperature shifts before reaching destination ports.

1. Corrugated Master Carton Engineering
Standard domestic Indian cardboard is 3-ply with low burst strength. For ocean export, we strictly specify:
- Minimum 5-Ply Double-Wall: 180β200 GSM virgin kraft liner with high-flute corrugated medium, achieving an Edge Crush Test (ECT) of ≥ 44 lbs/in and burst test of 200β250 PSI.
- 7-Ply Triple-Wall for Heavy Goods: Required for solid wood dining tables, heavy marble consoles, and cast metal decor exceeding 45 kg.
- Stapled vs. Glued Seams: Heavy-duty zinc-plated wire stitching at the manufacturer joint to prevent seam bursts when stacked 4-high in a high-cube container.
2. Internal Padding & Edge Protection
A carton must maintain a 25mm to 50mm shock-absorption buffer around every finished surface:
- Expanded Polyethylene (EPE) Foam: 10mm to 20mm EPE foam wrapping directly against stained wood surfaces. (Never use thermocol/polystyrene directly against fresh lacquer as it can chemically react and leave permanent imprints).
- High-Density Molded Corner Caps: 25mm thick L-shaped and 3-way corner blocks shielding table corners and leg aprons.
- Floating Foam for Stone & Glass: Marble tabletops and glass panels must be suspended in high-density polyethylene foam channels with zero direct contact to outer carton walls.
3. Wooden Crating & ISPM-15 Fumigation Compliance
Heavy stone architectural elements, vintage haveli doors, and fragile bone inlay require rigid closed or slatted wooden crates:
- ISPM-15 Heat Treatment: All solid wood packaging material (pallets, dunnage, crates) must be heat-treated (HT) to a minimum core temperature of 56°C for 30 minutes in an approved government facility and carry the official IPPC wheat-stamp. Uncertified wood causes automatic container quarantine and re-export penalties at US and EU customs.
- Plywood Crate Exemption: Engineered plywood crates (E1/E2 grade) are processed under heat/pressure and exempt from ISPM-15 stamping, making them ideal for high-value delicate carvings.
- Diagonal Cross-Bracing: Every crate wall must feature diagonal 1x4 inch timber bracing to resist torsional racking during crane lifting.
4. Preventing Container Rain & Tropical Mildew
When a sealed steel container travels from hot, humid Indian ports across cold ocean currents, internal moisture condenses against the steel roof and "rains" onto top-tier cartons. We mandate:
- Top Polyethylene Tarpaulin: 150-micron plastic sheeting laid over the entire top tier of cargo inside the container.
- Calcium Chloride Desiccant Bags: Hanging 1 kg or 2 kg high-absorption calcium chloride desiccant poles (not tiny silica pouches) inside container wall corrugations (minimum 10 kg per 40ft container).
5. On-Site ISTA 1A Drop Test Protocol
