Rajasthan natural stone prepared for export sourcing

One of the most common questions we hear is: 'I'm a small business β€” will Indian suppliers even work with me?' The answer is yes, absolutely. In fact, many Indian manufacturers prefer smaller, consistent orders over one-off large orders from unpredictable buyers.

Start With One Product Category

The biggest mistake new importers make is trying to source everything at once. Pick one product you understand well β€” maybe it's wooden coasters, or stone planters, or brass candle holders β€” and focus on that. Learn the product, understand the market, build a relationship with one good supplier, then expand.

Your First Order Should Be Small (But Not Tiny)

Don't order 10,000 units on your first try. But also don't order just 10 pieces β€” most manufacturers have minimum order requirements, and an unreasonably small order signals that you're not serious. A good starting point is often one carton or one pallet, depending on the product.

Payment Methods for Small Orders

For first orders, most Indian suppliers will ask for advance payment via bank transfer (T/T). PayPal is rare in Indian B2B trade. For larger orders, you can negotiate Letter of Credit (L/C) terms. Never pay 100% upfront for large orders β€” standard practice is 30% advance and 70% before shipment.

Finding the Right Supplier

IndiaMART, Alibaba, and trade shows are all starting points, but they're not enough. You need to verify suppliers independently. A factory visit, or hiring a local sourcing agent to visit on your behalf, is the most reliable way to confirm you're dealing with a genuine manufacturer.

Understanding Indian Business Culture

Relationships matter enormously in Indian business. A supplier who considers you a partner β€” not just a transactional buyer β€” will prioritize your orders, communicate proactively, and go the extra mile when issues arise. Building this relationship takes time and personal interaction.

Growing Your Business

Once you've successfully completed 2-3 orders with the same supplier, you'll have built trust. This is when you can start negotiating better prices, requesting custom designs, exploring new product categories, and scaling up your imports.
