After inspecting hundreds of furniture shipments, we've seen every quality issue imaginable. Here are the most common problems and how to prevent them.
1. Finish Issues
Uneven staining, drips, bubbles in lacquer, colour inconsistency between pieces, and peeling finish are the most common furniture defects. Prevention: specify finish samples, require production samples before bulk, and inspect during the finishing stage.
2. Structural Weakness
Loose joints, insufficient glue, weak hardware, and wobbly construction. Prevention: require specification of joint types (dovetail, mortise and tenon, etc.), test structural integrity during inspection, and specify weight limits.
3. Dimensional Inconsistency
Tables that are supposed to be 180cm but come in at 178cm, chairs with uneven legs, drawers that don't fit their openings. Prevention: provide detailed dimensioned drawings with tolerances, and check key dimensions during inspection.
4. Wood Defects
Knots in wrong places, cracks, warping, and insect damage. Prevention: specify wood grade requirements, require kiln-dried wood, and inspect raw material before production begins.
5. Hardware Problems
Drawers that stick, handles that loosen, hinges that don't align. Prevention: specify hardware brand and type, test all moving parts during inspection.
6. Packing Damage
Products that were fine at the factory but arrive damaged due to poor packing. Prevention: specify packing requirements in detail, inspect packing before container loading, and consider container loading supervision.
