The three main product inspections β Pre-Shipment (PSI), During Production (DPI), and Final Random (FRI) β each serve different purposes. Understanding when to use each helps you optimize your quality budget.
Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI)
The most common inspection type. Conducted when 80%+ of production is complete and products are packed. You can check both product quality and packing. Best for: most situations, especially first orders or when quality has been inconsistent.
During Production Inspection (DPI)
Conducted when 20-60% of production is complete. Allows you to catch problems early and give feedback before the entire order is produced. Best for: large orders, new products, custom designs, or situations where early issues could be amplified across the full order.
Final Random Inspection (FRI)
Conducted on finished, packed goods ready for shipment. A statistical sample is pulled from the packed cartons. Best for: reorders from trusted suppliers where you want final verification without opening all the packing.
Which Should You Choose?
For most importers, PSI is the default choice β it gives you the most comprehensive view. DPI adds value for large or complex orders. FRI is good for reorders. Some importers use DPI + FRI (skip the PSI and inspect during production plus at final packing).
Can You Do More Than One?
Absolutely. For high-value orders or new supplier relationships, combining DPI (to catch early issues) with PSI or FRI (to verify the final product) provides the strongest quality assurance.
