Finished Indian products during quality inspection

One of the first things we do when working with a new client is clarify whether their supplier is a genuine manufacturer or a trading company. Both have their place, but you need to know what you're dealing with.

What Is a Manufacturer?

A manufacturer owns or operates the production facility. They have machines, workers, and raw materials. They control the production process from start to finish. When you order from a manufacturer, you're buying directly from the source.

What Is a Trading Company?

A trading company buys from multiple manufacturers and sells to you. They don't own production facilities. They add a margin β€” sometimes modest, sometimes significant. They often handle export documentation, logistics, and consolidation.

When a Trading Company Makes Sense

Trading companies add real value when you need: products from multiple manufacturers consolidated into one shipment, someone who handles all export documentation, a buffer between you and small factories that can't handle international trade, or quality assurance across multiple suppliers.

When You Should Go Direct

Going direct to a manufacturer makes sense when: you're ordering large volumes, you need custom designs or modifications, you want the best possible price, or you have the infrastructure to manage quality and logistics yourself.

How to Tell Which One You're Dealing With

Ask to visit the factory. A manufacturer will welcome you. A trading company will make excuses. Ask about their machinery and production capacity. Ask to see recent production records. Ask for their GST registration and compare the business name with the factory name.
