Indian wood furniture and carving prepared for export sourcing

Handicrafts present a unique quality control challenge: every piece is slightly different because a human being made it by hand. This is part of their charm and value β€” but it also means that standard quality inspection approaches need to be adapted.

The Variation Question

In factory production, deviation from spec is a defect. In handicrafts, slight variation is inherent. The key is defining where acceptable variation ends and defects begin. This needs to be agreed with the supplier upfront and documented clearly.

Common Handicraft Quality Issues

  • Inconsistent sizing between pieces in the same order
  • Uneven paint or finish application
  • Rough edges or surfaces that should be smooth
  • Weak joints (especially in mixed-material pieces)
  • Colour variation between pieces (natural dyes are especially variable)

Setting Realistic Expectations

If you're ordering 100 hand-carved wooden boxes, they won't be identical. And that's fine β€” your customers expect handmade variation. But they should all be recognizably the same product, with consistent overall quality.

Inspection Approach

For handicrafts, we recommend a visual inspection with clear photographic documentation of the approved sample, followed by batch inspection where each piece is individually checked against the approved sample rather than measured with calipers.
