India's pottery traditions are ancient and diverse. For importers, the three main categories — blue pottery, terracotta, and paper-thin — each offer different aesthetics, price points, and market appeal.
Jaipur Blue Pottery
The most distinctive Indian pottery. Made from quartz powder (not clay), shaped, glazed with cobalt oxide blue, and fired. Lightweight, translucent, and beautiful. Popular items include plates, tiles, vases, bowls, and decorative panels.
Terracotta Pottery
Traditional fired clay pottery — red, earthy, and rustic. From simple garden pots to elaborate decorative sculptures. Terracotta is affordable, eco-friendly, and has universal appeal. Major production centres in Rajasthan and Gujarat.
Kagji (Paper-Thin) Pottery
An extraordinary technique from Rajasthan where potters produce incredibly thin-walled pottery. So thin it's almost translucent. Fragile and beautiful — a genuine artisan product that commands premium prices.
Import Considerations
All pottery is fragile — packing quality is critical. Blue pottery should be individually wrapped with foam protection. Terracotta is more robust but still needs careful packing. Lead times for handmade pottery are typically 3-6 weeks.
