Agra is synonymous with the Taj Mahal, but the city's other great tradition — marble inlay (pietra dura) — is equally remarkable. The same techniques used to create the Taj's exquisite decorations are still practiced by artisans in Agra's workshops.
The Pietra Dura Tradition
Pietra dura involves cutting semi-precious stones (lapis lazuli, malachite, coral, mother of pearl, etc.) into thin slices and inlaying them into marble surfaces to create intricate floral and geometric patterns. Each piece can take days or weeks to complete.

Quality Assessment
Quality in Agra inlay work varies enormously. High-quality pieces have: precise stone cutting with tight fits, vibrant stone colours, smooth surface finish (no raised edges), and consistent pattern alignment. Cheap tourist items have visible gaps and use imitation stones.
Pricing
Tourist-grade items: $5-50. Mid-range export quality: $20-200. Premium gallery-quality pieces: $200-2000+. The range is enormous, and quality assessment is critical.
